Avoid distracting sunlight WITHOUT wearing wraparound sunglasses: sunglass curtains to the rescue!

Originally published 2025-09-29.

Background:

Sunglasses: they keep the sun out of your eyes.

The Issue:

UNLESS, of course, the sun happens to be to the side (and the sunglasses aren’t wrap-around sunglasses): then, your eyeballs will be seared with deadly solar radiation (Figure 1).

Fig. 1: Although these sunglasses do a great job of blocking sunlight coming from the front, there’s nothing to prevent sunlight from coming in at an angle! Woe.

Proposal:

The solution is simple: it’s the same as the solution for windows in a house—add curtains! See Figure 2 for a mockup.

Fig. 2: Here, we can see the a curtain rod that allows the easy deployment of sun-blocking fabric wherever it is needed.

In the model shown in Figure 2, the curtain rod can be manually detached from the glasses and redeployed on whichever side the sun is coming from. One might also imagine a “deluxe” version of these sunglasses with curtains on both sides.

Conclusion:

This is likely to be the next fashion trend; possibly this will be combined with augmented-reality glasses for the ultimate in modern convenience.

PROS: Prevents distracting sunlight and reduces the chance of ear sunburns, an oft-overlooked modern danger.

CONS: On a windy day, it might be difficult to keep these curtains in place.
